CoderDojo Petaluma will be fielding a FIRST LEGO League team this fall!
What is it?
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) programs challenge kids to think like scientists and engineers. The FIRST LEGO League is for kids grades 4-8 who will build, test, program and present an autonomous robot using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® technology to solve a set of real-world missions.
This year’s challenge theme is Hydro Dynamics, and the details of the challenge will be released August 29. Here is the reveal video for last year’s theme “Animal Allies”.
Who can attend?
Interested kids in grades 4-8. We think CoderDojo kids are in a great position to take advantage of this opportunity and have a lot of fun.
We will select up to 10 team members based on interest level and willingness to participate. Kids do not need to have attended CoderDojo sessions, and a team needs all kinds of talent, not just engineering.
When does it start?
We would like to have our team organized and start team meetings around August 15. The details of this year’s challenge will be released on August 29, and official competitions begin in October. Mentor Phil and Mentor Candace will lead weekly team meetings at the Petaluma Library which will probably coincide with our regular CoderDojo sessions. Details to be announced soon!
How do I find out more?

Additionally, we will be holding a bake sale at Copperfield’s in Petaluma on July 22 from 10:30-1:00 as well as an open house at the Petaluma Library on July 26 at 6:30 where interested students and families can find out more information in person.
